VM Hosting

We are pleased to offer a new virtualization platform for use by the CAHNRS community. Our platform consists of three converged systems utilizing AMD Epyc processors, with 34TB of NVMe storage (utilizing three-way mirroring allowing for live migration), and dual 25Gb connections per server. This service provides isolated instances of Windows or Linux to develop, deploy, or run dedicated services and applications not well suited for a shared compute environment.

What is this good for:

A primary consideration for utilizing a virtual system is the consolidation of hardware resources. Not all applications and services require the full capabilities of bare-metal hardware; through virtualization, you can fine-tune hardware resources based on need.

Virtualized systems provide a an isolated environment ideal for testing or developing a production environment. Additionally, the isolated environment ensures that your virtualized system does not interfere with your production environment.

Finally, virtualized systems provide robust compute power for single purpose use cases at a fraction of bare-metal hardware cost, and virtualized systems can be easily created, removed, restored, and duplicated.

What is this not good for:

We offer a host of robust options for your virtualized system; however, you have considerations to make before delving into the commitment of a virtual system.

You may need another computing option other than virtualized systems if:

  • You require hardware resource allocation that exceeds our available offerings.
  • You require GPU-accelerated compute power.
  • If you require an off-site mirrored system.
  • If you need “bare-metal” control access to your system.

How is CIT supporting this:

CAHNRS Operations and IT will provide regular VM backups of the VHDX files, operating system patching, datacenter firewall management, and installation and first-run configuration of VM setup.

We’ll also provide Administrator and Root credential management to ensure that CIT retains back-end access to all servers to provide additional support functions in case of system lockouts.

As always, CAHNRS Operations and IT will provide support and best practice guidance for all ticketed support requests.

How do I get this:

PleaseĀ fill out the form below.

VMs are billed a prorated amounted annual amount from the date that CAHNRS Operations makes VMs available to the requesting party. VMs will continue to be billed at the beginning of every fiscal year until canceled by the VM requester.

VM Request Form

This form will allow you to request Virtual Machine resources from CAHNRS IT. All prices listed below are per year and will be billed yearly until canceled by VM requester.
  • Tell Us About Your VM

  • MM slash DD slash YYYY
  • If necessary, please supply a date to have your VM decommissioned and deleted.
    MM slash DD slash YYYY
  • Please provide a brief description of what the VM will be used for and include any non-productivity applications will be installed on the system. If your VM will require firewall rules to accommodate unique ports for network traffic, please include that in the description.
  • Please provide a name for your system in the format of Area-LastName-Purpose-# (example: CIT-Smith-SQL1 or Hort-Smith-Web1)
  • Please provide a DNS name to associate with your server for local and public network access which will append to .cahnrs.wsu.edu (example: smithlab.cahnrs.wsu.edu or smithdb.cahnrs.wsu.edu). Additional DNS aliases can be added or changed, now or in the future with a support request to our Helpdesk.
  • Does the server need to be accessible by the general public or only accessible for internal WSU use only?
  • Please tell us why the system requires public access (150 Character Limit). If you selected "Internal Only" please type "N/A."
  • Please provide a list of WSU individuals that will require access to the VM.
  • Please select all data types that will be stored on the server.
  • Please select, if any, additional network attached storage (slower but cheaper storage than the available VM storage)? Additional storage will be charged at a rate of $7.66/100GB/year. Storage is replicated to a highly-available pair. Additionally, storage is attached using iSCSI by default but alternately be set up as NFS or SMB upon request.
  • Please Select Your VM Type

  • CAHNRS will only deploy currently-supported Windows Operating Systems and Linux distributions?
  • For Windows-based servers, do you need this server exempt from being domain-joined? By default CAHNRS domain-join Windows servers for standardized management and to take advantage of domain authentication and rights-management.
  • Administrative Information

  • Please provide the email for the individual that will own the VM (typically a lab manager, PI, graduate student advisor, etc.)
  • Please choose the department associated with the VM accountable party.
  • Please tell us what lab/research unit for the VM. If none, please type "N/A."
  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
