Physical Server to VM

We are pleased to offer a new virtualization platform for use by the CAHNRS community. Our platform consists of three converged systems utilizing AMD Epyc processors, with 34TB of NVMe storage (utilizing three-way mirroring allowing for live migration), and dual 25Gb connections per server. This service provides isolated instances of Windows or Linux to develop, deploy, or run dedicated services and applications not well suited for a shared compute environment.

What is this good for:

If you are running critical applications and services on outdated hardware, then please consider migrating away from your bare-metal server chassis and moving your services to a virtualized instance on our platform.

A primary consideration for utilizing a virtual system is the consolidation of hardware resources. Not all applications and services require the full capabilities of bare-metal hardware; through virtualization, you can fine-tune hardware resources based on need.

Virtualized systems provide a an isolated environment ideal for testing or developing a production environment. Additionally, the isolated environment ensures that your virtualized system does not interfere with your production environment.

Finally, virtualized systems provide robust compute power for single purpose use cases at a fraction of bare-metal hardware cost, and virtualized systems can be easily created, removed, restored, and duplicated.

What is this not good for:

We offer a host of robust options for your virtualized system; however, you have considerations to make before delving into the commitment of a virtual system.

You may need another computing option other than virtualized systems if:

  • You require hardware resource allocation that exceeds our available offerings.
  • You require GPU-accelerated compute power.
  • If you require an off-site mirrored system.
  • If you need “bare-metal” control access to your system.

How is CIT supporting this:

CAHNRS Operations and IT will provide regular VM backups of the VHDX files, operating system patching, datacenter firewall management, and installation and first-run configuration of VM setup.

We’ll also provide Administrator and Root credential management to ensure that CIT retains back-end access to all servers to provide additional support functions in case of system lockouts.

As always, CAHNRS Operations and IT will provide support and best practice guidance for all ticketed support requests.

How do I get this:

PleaseĀ fill out the form below.
